Balloons carrying thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to thirty canceled flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two balloons ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though additional discoveries are expected, according to law enforcement authorities.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why criminals use a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the region.
