Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments from skipper Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes delivered this message in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes against Australia earlier this month.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his message to "drift around" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," remarked the England leader.

However, after the opener scored a knock of 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Frank Discussions and Steady Philosophy

Stokes made the "weak men" observation after England were beaten in Brisbane to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to remain in contention in the series.

Nevertheless, the Kent batsman stated the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, unchanged," noted Crawley. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this Test."

The Hosts Close of Historic Ashes Triumph

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Stokes himself – left the chasing side 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, Australia require four wickets on Sunday's last day to secure an unassailable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

Defeat would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight away Ashes defeat.

The current battle is set to be decided in just 11 days of play – with England losing the initial matches in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disappointing," said the batsman. "We came here to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was inevitably tough coming here against them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place Under Scrutiny

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures questions about his immediate future in the side, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second innings on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, the Surrey man has never made a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top six in Ashes Tests and recorded a lower average.

But, Crawley insisted any suggestion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no discussion of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," Crawley finished.
