RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French warplanes in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syria used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The facility, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was situated in hills just north of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the site... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - established militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the region," the British Defence Secretary John Healey stated.

RAF aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "deter any attempted comeback" of IS following its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I want to thank every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, shows how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces executed what it called a "large-scale strike" against Daesh sites in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The United Nations estimates Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in both countries.
